 How is it made?

This African Black soap is made traditionally in Ghana using traditional methods. It is made from the ash of locally harvested plants and barks such a plantain, cocoa pods, palm tree leaves, and shea tree bark. Many years of use by people around the world has proven it to be an amazing natural alternative for those struggling with troubled skin.

First the leaves and bark are sun-dried and then roasted in a kettle or pot at an even, constant temperature, which is important to ensure colour, texture and smell. Then water and various oils - palm oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil (including shea butter and cocoa pod powder/ ash) - are added to the mixture and stirred for at least a day. After that, the "soap" is left to set for two weeks to cure. Different tribes and communities in Africa have adopted their own specific blend of oils and cooking techniques, which can be seen in the different colour variations among black soap.

Ingredients may vary slightly from batch to batch as this is handmade from traditional recipes in Ghana using locally sourced natural ingredients obtained from locally harvested plants, bark and natural plant based oils/ butters. Different tribes and communities in Africa have adopted their own specific blend of oils and cooking techniques, which can be seen in the different colour variations among black soap. It is generally made with ingredients such as water, plantain leaves, cocoa pod ash, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, unrefined shea butter, palm tree leaves, shea tree bark, natural vitamin E and plantain skin ashes.

How to use African Black Soap

A little African Black soap goes a long way. Here is a step-by-step guide to using this wonderful soap as a part of your beauty routine:

  • Moisten your skin with water.
  • Wet the bar of soap until it forms a lather. You can create a lather gently using your hands, or with a wash-cloth, loofah or sponge.
  • Circularly wash your skin for 90 seconds with the soap on your hands, loofah or sponge. Avoid the eye area. DO NOT rub or apply the soap directly on the skin and face. This soap may contain small particles of plantains, bark or husk that could scratch or cause irritation.
  • Optional- You massage your skin with the soap and an exfoliating brush, loofah or washcloth for deep cleansing and exfoliation.
  • Rinse with water, preferably warm.
  • Apply your favourite moisturiser or skincare products as usual.
  • Store your soap as recommended in between uses (please see the ‘recommended storage’ tips below).

African Black Soap can also be used for removing makeup. As mentioned, avoid the eye area.

It can be used regularly, however it is better to gradually include it in your skincare regimen.

RECOMMENDED STORAGE:

African Black soap is extremely soft, thereby, it may quickly dissolve if left standing in water or not properly stored after use.

African Black Soap absorbs water, therefore please don’t let it sit in a puddle of water  after use. Keep it dry to keep it from dissolving. Ideally, place the bar on a wooden soap dish with slats (or similar soap dish with drainage) to allow the soap to drain. Ideally just cut/ break off chunks that you are using and put them in your

soap dish with slats, keeping the rest in an airtight container, plastic wrap or ziplock bag, in a cool dry storage area. Wooden soap dishes with slats can be purchased separately from our store or as a bundle with our 1 pound African Black Soap.

Please note that the colour/texture of this product can vary slightly between batches. Shape of the bar may vary.  This product is handmade traditionally in Africa and how hard/soft/ dark the soap is will vary between batches. This product is for external use only.

 CAUTIONS:

African Black soap is extremely soft, thereby, it may quickly dissolve if left standing in water or not properly stored after use.

Avoid the eye area.

DO NOT rub or apply the soap directly on the skin and face. This soap may contain be rough and contain small particles of plantains, bark or husk that could scratch or cause irritation.

You can rub the soap onto a wash cloth, loofah or your hands and then apply to the skin. Or if using directly on the skin take care not to scratch the skin should any of the natural pieces of bark be sharp. This is generally not very common, however it is possible with hand made African Black Soap.

As with any new product, It is recommended that you do a small skin patch test prior to use to ensure you have no irritations or allergic reactions.  To do this, apply a small amount to a patch of skin and wait 24-48 hours to see if a negative reaction occurs. Consult your dermatologist if you have any skin conditions prior to use. Avoid using it with chemical exfoliants as it may cause irritation. If you are using active skincare that may make your skin sensitive, always test on a small area prior to full use. Do not consume. For external use only. Keep away from children and eyes.
