DIY HIBISCUS RECIPES FOR BOOSTING HAIR GROWTH, CONTROLLING BREAKAGE AND PROMOTING HEALTHY, SMOOTH AND SHINY HAIR
The amino acids naturally found in hibiscus flowers help to promote hair growth as well as nourish the hair. These amino acids help to produce a special type of structural protein called keratin, which is the building block of hair. Keratin binds the hair, making it strong and less prone to breakage. It also promotes the overall thickness of the hair strands and makes the hair healthy and more manageable.

DIY Hibiscus Hair Growth Oil
Hibiscus Hair Oil can be made in many ways. You can use any oil of your choice. It may be something you have at home or one of these suggested hair growth promoting oils (or choose than one oil!):
The measurements are flexible and can be to your individual desire. As a general guide 1 part dried Hibiscus leaves to 3 parts carrier oil is suitable. For example, you can use 1/4 cup of dried Hibiscus to ¾ cup of your chosen oil/s. If making a batch of Hibiscus Oil to use for several applications you may increase the amount and put in a bottle for ease of use. You can increase the proportions if you like. The more Hibiscus you add, the stronger the Hibiscus will be. Just ensure you completely cover the Hibiscus with oil.
Quick Method- Using gentle heat:
- Using a mortar and pestle, grind the dried Hibiscus . This step can be skipped if you prefer to use the dried Hibiscus as is.
- In a heavy bottom pot or double boiler, warm the dried hibiscus in an oil of your choice for 2-3 minutes. If you are using an oil that should not be exposed to high heat, you can very slowly warm this mixture on a low heat. If your chosen oil is heat sensitive and will lose its properties if heated you may wish to use the slow (no heat at all) method below.
- Allow to cool and strain.
Slow Method- Infusion:
- The slow method is great when you have some time to allow your chosen oil to sit and infuse without the use of heat. This is a good method for oils that are sensitive to heat or where you would like your oil to just slowly infuse without needing to do the heating method.
- You simply mix your dried Hibiscus (ground or as is) and chosen oil together in a suitable container (such as a glass jar). Cap the jar tightly and shake well. Ensure the Hibiscus is covered in oil.
- Allow to sit in a warm sunny place to infuse (such as a window sill). Shake once or more per day. If your chosen oil’s storage suggestions recommend you keep your oil out of direct sunlight, then you should sit this oil to infuse in a cool dark place instead. You may wish to leave it to infuse longer if it is infusing in a dark place as opposed to a sunny place.
- Leave for at least a few days. Ideally 2 to 3 weeks.
- Strain using a cheesecloth or mesh strainer and pour into a bottle.
- Store in a cool, dark place. You may wish to add up to 1% Vitamin E Oil to extend the shelf life of your oil.

CAUTION – If you have light hair e.g. blonde to light brown, using Hibiscus in your hair can darken your hair. Always do a test strand prior to use and avoid using too frequently if your hair is light. Use your discretion to determine if this is right for your hair and which method / strength works best for your hair.
Due to the fact hibiscus can stain, you might want to cover your workspace and wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained when making the oil.
